Toxic Parenting, Real Faith and True Healing

Welcome back to Life Unfiltered! In this deeply personal episode, Kashmir opens up about growing up with an emotionally immature father — and how those wounds follow you into adulthood. Jackie and Kashmir explore grief, boundaries, triggers, and how God gently rewrites the identities distorted by childhood trauma.

“Why Aren’t You Over It Yet?” — When Childhood Trauma Follows You Into Adulthood

Kashmir shares how she often judged herself for still being triggered by her father’s behavior — even years later. Emotional immaturity, manipulation, and shame-based parenting leave deep impressions: perfectionism, people-pleasing, fear of disappointing others, and the belief that love is conditional.

She describes experiences many adult children relate to:
• Being blamed for a parent’s emotions
• Feeling responsible for their happiness
• Becoming “small” to avoid conflict
• Learning to hide needs to stay safe

📖 Breaking Cycles: Naming Triggers, Letting Go of Shame & Facing the Truth

While reading Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, Kashmir realized she matched the “internalizer” — the child who becomes overly responsible, overly empathetic, and emotionally self-silencing.

But she refused to stay that way.

Healing looked like:
• Tracking emotional triggers
• Noticing perfectionist behaviors
• Understanding where control came from
• Inviting God into the wound
• Separating her earthly father from her Heavenly Father

“God isn’t disappointed in me. He isn’t explosive. He isn’t withholding love. That was my dad — not God.”

Grieving the Father You Wanted While Accepting the One You Had

Honor does not mean access.
Forgiveness does not mean reconciliation.
Peace does not mean pretending nothing happened.

“I couldn’t protect myself as a child. But I can protect myself as an adult.”

Jackie affirms that God wants peace, safety, and emotional health — not cycles of shame.

When God Gives You Double for Your Trouble

Even though Kashmir’s biological father rejected her, God filled the gap:

  • A loving stepfather
    • Jackie’s husband Jerry, who treats her like a daughter
    • Her mom’s boyfriend, who shows care and connection
    • Mentors, friends, and community that surround her with real love

“God didn’t leave me fatherless. He gave me fathers through other people.”
